IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
Preserve NAFTA To Help Agricultural Producers

As someone who has a background in farming and ranching, and as a representative for many who do so, I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the challenges that farmers face. Fluctuating prices for the goods and specific services provided by farmers can be a lot to deal with, and we face the same market pressures in many respects that any small business owner faces.
That is why being able to have unfettered access to foreign markets is essential, and while I can understand the concern that a lot of people have toward NAFTA, I will say that it has been absolutely critical to agricultural producers. The markets that are opened up to agricultural exports thanks to NAFTA have made a measurable impact in Missouri, supporting over 950,000 jobs. In fact, for 2016, Missouri ranked in the top five nationally in terms of percentage of agricultural exports to NAFTA partners.
This is why I recently sponsored the HCR in the Missouri House of Representatives urging Congress and President Trump to preserve NAFTA and the benefits it provides agricultural producers. I was pleased to see Congressman Billy Long recognize the importance of this issue as well, as he quickly signed on to a letter sent by the Missouri congressional delegation to the United States Trade Representative that highlights these important agricultural features of NAFTA. I am all for making sure we take care of American interests first, but it is important as well that the president and his team appreciate the positive impact NAFTA makes on Missouri agriculture, and this concerted effort by our federal representation will hopefully do just that.
Financially speaking, farmers really never get out of their work what they put into it. That’s why we need to preserve these foreign markets and the significant impact they make on Missouri’s farm families. Thanks again to Congressman Long for pushing to keep these important NAFTA provisions in place!
