Americans For Farmers & Families Statement Following China’s Announcement To Impose Retaliatory Tariffs
(Washington, D.C.) – Americans for Farmers & Families (AFF) today released the following statement from Casey Guernsey, former Missouri state legislator and spokesman for AFF’s “Retaliation Hurts Rural Families” initiative, following China’s announcement to impose retaliatory tariffs in response to $50 billion in U.S. tariffs:
“Today’s announcement from China should come as no surprise. China is officially delivering on its promise to fight back against sweeping tariffs and rural Americans will pay the price, devastating many of the family farms that have already been struggling to make ends meet.
“We appreciate the need to stand up to trading partners that have treated America unfairly, but this should not be done at the expense of America’s farmers and families.
“Crops are in the ground and will soon be ready for harvest. We need the certainty of knowing that there will be market availability in order to sell them. As access to China, one of of our largest customers wanes, farmers need the North American Free Trade Agreement – and even greater access to America’s second and third largest trading partners – now more than ever.”
